Oma

Designing a preventive health platform for early childhood development

Founding Product Designer • 7 Months • Pre-seed

Helping parents make better healthcare decisions by turning fragmented medical information into continuous, actionable guidance.

Parents don't need more medical data. They need confidence in what to do next.

That idea became the foundation of Oma.

The story

Most healthcare systems only become part of a family's life when something goes wrong.

A fever.

A missed vaccination.

A worrying symptom.

Everything before that is scattered across vaccination cards, medical reports, growth charts and personal observations.

Parents already have plenty of information.

The challenge is understanding what it all means.

Oma set out to shift healthcare from occasional visits to continuous care by bringing every part of a child's development into one connected experience.

Understanding the problem

While working with the founders, one pattern became clear.

Parents weren't struggling to collect information.

They were struggling to connect it.

Questions kept coming up:

  • Is my child developing normally?

  • What should I keep an eye on next?

  • Which reports actually matter?

  • When should I consult a doctor?

  • What changes over time should concern me?

The problem wasn't missing data.

It was missing context.

That insight shaped every product decision that followed.

Designing around prevention

One idea influenced the entire product.

Parents don't need more medical information.

They need clarity.

Instead of overwhelming users with reports, every interaction focused on answering four simple questions.

  • What happened?

  • What does it mean?

  • What should I monitor?

  • What should I do next?

Rather than presenting more data, the product translated complex health information into meaningful next steps.

Building a connected health ecosystem

Instead of treating every feature as a separate tool, Oma was designed as one connected system.

Designing for parents, not patients

Parents don't think in terms of medical systems.

They think in moments.

"My child has a fever."

"Did we miss a vaccination?"

"Is this normal?"

"When is the next milestone?"

The experience was designed around those questions instead of around features.

Rather than asking parents to search through reports, the platform surfaced the most relevant information based on context, helping them move naturally from observation to understanding.

Simplifying healthcare information

Medical information becomes overwhelming when every piece of data is treated equally.

To reduce cognitive load, the experience grouped information into clear, familiar categories.

  • Health Overview

  • Growth & Development

  • Vaccinations

  • Nutrition

  • Medical History

  • Reports

  • AI Assistant

  • Health Insights

The goal wasn't to simplify medicine.

It was to make healthcare easier to understand.

Designing the AI experience

The AI assistant wasn't designed to replace doctors.

Its role was to make healthcare easier to navigate.

Parents could use it to:

  • Understand health reports

  • Interpret developmental information

  • Explain unfamiliar medical terminology

  • Ask everyday healthcare questions

  • Understand appropriate next steps

Instead of giving diagnoses, the assistant translated complex medical information into plain language and encouraged informed conversations with healthcare professionals.

Designing the foundation

Although the platform was still in its early stages, the work established the foundation for everything that followed.

That included:

  • Defining the product architecture

  • Creating scalable information structures

  • Simplifying complex healthcare journeys

  • Integrating AI into meaningful workflows

  • Establishing a prevention-first product vision

  • Building a flexible foundation for future features

What I learned

Working on Oma changed how I think about healthcare design.

The hardest part wasn't organising medical information.

It was helping parents feel confident enough to act on it.

Designing for healthcare means balancing clarity with accuracy, empathy with responsibility, and simplicity with trust.

That's a balance I've continued to carry into every product I've designed since.
